The Africa Center
Welcome to our first place of our New York City 5th Avenue, Museum Mile, tour! The Africa Center, an important cultural institution dedicated to African cultures, arts, and businesses. Serving as a hub for different events, exhibitions, and programs that highlight diversity, understanding, and the empowerment of the African continent and its descendants.

With ever changing exhibitions, the Africa Center has a wide variety of programs and artists to look into the past, present, and even the future. The center is also directly connected to the Museum for African Art which was founded in 1984 that has now grown across the globe. Ranging from current events in politics, pop culture, and art, as well as important and influential African individuals, history, fashion, and community. The Africa Center is a lovely space for anyone and everyone, it’s always the right time to learn about a culture and history that has shaped so much of today’s world.

The center serves as a hub for those who want to learn more about African culture and history, but it also provides a platform for artists, thinkers, and leaders from African and the diaspora to share their perspectives and contribute to a more nuanced understanding of the continent. While of course based in New York City, the Africa Center positions itself as a global institution, emphasizing connections between Africa and the rest of the world. It is a space for cultural exchange, collaboration, and the sharing of ideas on a global scale, but also with those in your community.

Church of St Edward the Martyr
If you would like to take a quick turn off our route, to the left just half a block down is the Church of St Edward the Martyr. There are of course many churches throughout New York City, some much more of a grand appearance, but I wanted to mention this more humble church just for that reason.

Established in a beautiful brownstone back in 1883, but just two years later the building plans for a full church was accepted in the same location. Taking inspiration from their roots, the church still looks like an iconic brownstone just with some standard church designs. The Church of St Edward the Martyr quickly became a staple in the growing city of Manhattan, and has continued to evolve over the years. The church is known for its diversity and acceptance, it’s a lovely dichotomy of its detailed interior and heavily involved parish.

If you decide to take a walk to see the church with your own eyes, please make your way back to 5th Avenue, and we will continue on to our next place on the tour.
