Der Joshua-Tree-Nationalpark ist reich an Natur- und Kulturgeschichte und umfasst Jahrtausende geologischer Veränderungen sowie Jahrhunderte menschlicher Interaktion mit dieser einzigartigen Wüstenlandschaft.

Die beeindruckenden Landschaften von Joshua Tree begannen sich vor Millionen von Jahren zu formen. Erosionskräfte haben die Granitfelsen des Parks geformt, während tektonische Aktivitäten raue Berge entstehen ließen. Im Laufe der Zeit trafen zwei unterschiedliche Wüsten aufeinander – die höhere, kühlere Mojave-Wüste und die niedrigere, heißere Colorado-Wüste – und schufen die einzigartigen Ökosysteme des Parks.

Über Jahrtausende hinweg lebten hier indigene Völker wie die Serrano, Cahuilla und Chemehuevi. Sie jagten, sammelten Nahrung und hinterließen Artefakte wie Petroglyphen und Felsmörser zur Verarbeitung von Samen und Nüssen. Oasen wie die "Oasis of Mara" waren für ihr Überleben unerlässlich. Die Joshua-Palmlilie diente ihnen als Nahrungsquelle, zur Herstellung von Fasern und Werkzeugen und wurde tief in ihre kulturellen Traditionen integriert.

In den 1800er-Jahren lockten Gold- und Silbervorkommen Bergleute in die Region. Sie hinterließen Spuren wie die Lost Horse Mine und andere verlassene Minenbetriebe. Obwohl diese Minen kaum Gewinne abwarfen, prägten sie die Landschaft nachhaltig. Von den 1910er- bis zu den 1930er-Jahren nutzten Siedler den Homestead Act, um in der unwirtlichen Wüste Landwirtschaft und Viehzucht zu betreiben. Viele gaben auf, doch einige historische Gehöfte, wie die Keys Ranch, stehen noch heute.

In den 1930er-Jahren setzte sich die aus Pasadena stammende Botanikerin Minerva Hoyt unermüdlich für den Schutz der Wüste und ihrer Joshua-Bäume vor unkontrollierter Entwicklung ein. Dank ihrer Bemühungen erklärte Präsident Franklin D. Roosevelt das Gebiet 1936 zum Joshua-Tree-Nationalmonument. 1994 wurde es durch den California Desert Protection Act zum Nationalpark hochgestuft, wodurch seine Fläche auf 790.636 Acres erweitert und seine ökologische sowie kulturelle Bedeutung betont wurde.

Heute schützt der Park eines der vielfältigsten Wüstenökosysteme der Welt, das Heimat für Arten wie die Wüstenschildkröte, Dickhornschafe und Hunderte von Vogelarten ist. Der Schutz dieses empfindlichen Ökosystems ist von großer Bedeutung, damit diese atemberaubende Wüstenlandschaft und ihre Bewohner auch für zukünftige Generationen erhalten bleiben.
