Union Pacific Big Boy – Holiday Park
As you pass Holiday Park on your right, take a look at one of Cheyenne’s proudest landmarks — the Union Pacific Big Boy No. 4004. This enormous steam locomotive is one of only 25 ever built, and it’s among the few still on public display today.

The Big Boy was designed in the 1940s to conquer the steep grades of the Wasatch Mountains between Wyoming and Utah. Each engine weighed over a million pounds and stretched more than 130 feet long — longer than two semi-trucks back to back.

This particular locomotive retired in 1958 after logging over a million miles. In 1963, it found a new home here in Holiday Park, where it stands as a tribute to the golden age of rail travel and Cheyenne’s deep railroad roots.

Cheyenne Depot Plaza and The Wrangler Building
On your left is Cheyenne Depot Plaza, the vibrant heart of downtown Cheyenne. This open square sits in front of the beautifully restored Union Pacific Depot, one of the most iconic railroad stations in the American West. Built in the late 1800s, the depot once welcomed passengers traveling along the transcontinental line — and today, it’s home to a museum that celebrates the city’s deep railroad heritage. The plaza itself hosts concerts, farmers markets, and big community events like Cheyenne Frontier Days, when the whole city comes alive with cowboy spirit.

Right across the plaza, you’ll spot the Wrangler Building, a cornerstone of Western style. Originally built in 1892, this historic structure now houses The Wrangler — a massive Western wear store where locals and visitors alike pick up cowboy hats, boots, and denim before heading to the rodeo. It’s a perfect blend of old and new Cheyenne — where the city’s frontier past meets its modern-day Western pride.
