The theater was built in 1846 andholds great significance in Portugal's artistic and theatrical heritage.

Fado is traditionally performed by a solo singer accompanied by Portuguese guitar and sometimes classical guitar and the music often reflects themes of love, loss, and saudade (a Portuguese word meaning longing or melancholy).
