Kotor
Here we are beginning our drive in the lovely town of Kotor! Kotor is a medieval town and flourished as a major trading center during many different eras such as the Byzantine, Serbian, and Venetian. Kotor was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979 due to its outstanding natural beauty, but also its well preserved history throughout its borders. Kotor’s Old Town specifically is an almost perfect representation of medieval architecture. Its labyrinthine streets, squares, and churches reflect the various periods the area has gone through, from Romanesque and Gothic, to Renaissance and Baroque.

But, some eras were more influential for the city than others. The Venetian Republic was the strongest architectural influence in Kotor, it’s noticeable in the narrow streets, the many cobblestone squares lined with stores and restaurants, and the lovely and grand churches and fortresses such as the Cathedral of Saint Tryphon and the San Giovanni Fortress.

You’ll even find the symbol of Venice, the lion of St. Mark, engraved on several buildings and structures around Kotor. Legend has it that the Venetians ordered these lion sculptures to be placed around the town to protect it from evil spirits and to ensure its prosperity. I’d like to think this is true, because if you take a look at Kotor’s history after its Venetian rule, there were many threats of invasion and sieges during the Ottoman Empire’s expansion, but the city managed to stay safe thanks to its Venetian protection.

Although the town of Kotor has gone through massive changes and turmoil in its long standing history, it has been granted a sea of peace due to its beauty, architecture, and culture. Or maybe it’s just because of the sizable population of cats that roam the streets and alleys, nicknaming the town the “City of Cats” ! But, most likely it's the other three reasons.

Kampana Tower
As we drive through Kotor, you will soon notice the massive and beautiful medieval fortification that wraps around some of the other prominent landmarks in town. This is known as Kampana Tower. But, back in the day when it was first established in the 14th century by the Byzantine emperor Justinian I, it served as a stronghold to enhance defensive capabilities against their enemies. As you can see there is a large protrusion out on the corner, marking a bastion. They tend to be this shape in order for defenders to have a broader field of view of any assailants that may attack from various directions.

But, thankfully nowadays Kampana Tower simply stands as a gorgeous representation of medieval military architecture, and around it are other important Kotor establishments.

With Kotor’s rich maritime history, it would be a shame to not have a location to teach the public about it. Thankfully tucked in the city center, and to the right of Kampana, is the Maritime Museum. Built in the baroque palace Grgurin, there are many artifacts of the Boka navy, famous captains, models of galleys and boats, and other important instruments and items all related to the town’s sailing history. The sea is impactful for all of the people of Kotor, so having this museum is not only important for the tourists coming through Montenegro, but for its own people as well.

Remember the Cathedral of Saint Tryphon I mentioned? It stands parallel to the tower, and it dates back to the 12th century. It is one of the largest and most ornate buildings in Kotor, and its interior is no different. With frescoes from the 14th century and a stone ornament above the main altar depicting the life of Saint Tryphon, the cathedral is a symbol of the city, and the Saint is even a part of the city’s coat of arms.
