Kunta Kinte Memorial
The Kunta Kinte-Alex Haley Memorial stands as a poignant reminder of the transatlantic slave trade and the enduring spirit of those who fought for freedom. It commemorates Kunta Kinte, a young man who was abducted from Gambia in 1767 and brought to Annapolis. The memorial also honors Alex Haley, author of 'Roots,' who traced his ancestry back to Kinte. The sculptures depict Haley reading to children, symbolizing the importance of storytelling and preserving history. This site serves as a place for reflection and education, encouraging visitors to confront the painful realities of the past and to celebrate the resilience of the human spirit. What was the name of the ship that brought Kunta Kinte to America? Pause... The Lord Ligonier.
