Pride of Baltimore Memorial
Welcome to Baltimore, and welcome to the official kickoff of your walking tour.

We’re starting here at the Pride of Baltimore Memorial because this monument captures something essential about this city: resilience, ambition, and a deep connection to the water.

In front of you, the sweeping metal sails rise toward the sky, frozen in motion. They honor the tall ship Pride of Baltimore, which capsized in a sudden storm in 1986 while sailing home from the Caribbean. Four crew members lost their lives, and the tragedy deeply affected the community.

But Baltimore responded in the most Baltimore way possible — it rebuilt.

The original Pride was modeled after the historic “Baltimore Clippers,” sleek, fast ships that once made this port one of the most important in early American trade. After the disaster, a new ship — Pride of Baltimore II — was launched in 1988 and still sails today as Maryland’s ambassador to the world.

As we begin this tour of Baltimore — beyond just the harbor — you’ll see a city that has constantly reinvented itself. From shipbuilding and industry to culture, neighborhoods, food, and innovation, this is a place shaped by determination.

Baltimore has always faced the wind head-on.

And now, so do we.

Let’s continue.

Maryland Science Center
On your left, the modern building with the glass façade and rooftop observatory is the Maryland Science Center.

Opened in 1976, it’s one of Baltimore’s most interactive and family-friendly institutions — home to hands-on exhibits, a planetarium, and even a full-size dinosaur skeleton inside.

But its location here on the waterfront is symbolic. Baltimore has always been a city of builders, engineers, and innovators — from shipyards to steel mills to medical breakthroughs at Johns Hopkins.

The Science Center represents the city’s evolution — from industrial powerhouse to knowledge and research hub.

If you’re traveling with kids, this is a great place to return to later. If not, just appreciate how this harbor blends history and modern curiosity side by side.
