Point State Park
Alright folks, let’s kick start our Pittsburgh adventure right here at the city’s front door — Point State Park. This 36-acre green space sits at the very tip of the Golden Triangle, where the Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers meet to form the Ohio. It’s not just the best place to get your bearings — it’s also the place where Pittsburgh’s story began.

Back in the 1700s, this land was hotly contested. Both the French and the British built forts here during the French and Indian War, knowing that control of this point meant control of the rivers and trade routes. Today, you can still see a piece of that history at the Fort Pitt Block House, the city’s oldest surviving structure, and dive deeper into the story at the Fort Pitt Museum.

Of course, the centerpiece is the park’s iconic fountain, shooting water 150 feet into the air at the very tip of the point. On a sunny day, it frames one of the most photographed views in Pittsburgh, with the rivers, bridges, and skyline all coming together in one spectacular shot.

So take a look around, snap a few photos, and get ready — because if Point State Park is the beginning, you know we’ve got an exciting journey ahead.

PPG Place
On your right, feast your eyes on one of Pittsburgh’s most jaw-dropping landmarks: PPG Place. Doesn’t it look like a glass castle from a futuristic fairy tale? That was exactly the idea.

Completed in 1984 and designed by Philip Johnson and John Burgee, this post-modern complex nods to Pittsburgh’s Gothic heritage while embracing modern materials. And what materials! More than 19,000 panes of solar-tinted, reflective glass cover the buildings, turning them into shimmering mirrors that change with the sky. At different times of day, PPG Place looks like a different building—sometimes bright and crystalline, sometimes dark and dramatic.

The name comes from the Pittsburgh Plate Glass Company, today’s PPG Industries. They didn’t just develop the site—they produced the very glass that gives this place its magic. Talk about leaving your stamp on the skyline!

The complex itself is six buildings arranged around a lively central plaza. In the summer, the fountains invite you to cool off, while in winter the space transforms into a twinkling ice-skating rink straight out of a holiday postcard.
