The Durham Museum
On your right is the Durham Museum — one of Omaha’s true architectural and historical treasures. Housed inside the beautifully restored Union Station, this building first opened in 1931 as a grand gateway for travelers arriving by train. Designed in the Art Deco style, it was considered one of the most elegant stations in the country.

Today, it’s a museum that celebrates the region’s fascinating history — from the early pioneers who crossed the plains, to Omaha’s industrial boom and the golden age of rail travel. Inside, you can still admire the soaring ceilings, bronze chandeliers, and original ticket counters that capture the glamour of 1930s rail travel. The museum also features vintage trains, interactive exhibits, and even a working soda fountain that feels straight out of the past.

If you have time later, it’s definitely worth stepping inside to experience that perfect blend of nostalgia and discovery — a reminder of just how important Omaha was as a crossroads of America.

Heartland of America Park at The RiverFront
Coming up on your right is the Heartland of America Park at The RiverFront — one of Omaha’s most scenic spots and a key piece of the city’s newly revitalized riverfront area.

This beautiful park stretches along the Missouri River and was completely reimagined in recent years to create a welcoming, walkable space that connects downtown Omaha directly to the water. The centerpiece is a large lake with a graceful pedestrian bridge and a 300-foot fountain that lights up at night — a favorite local landmark.

As you pass, imagine this place a century ago, when steamboats docked nearby and the area buzzed with warehouses and rail yards. Today, it’s all about community — people come here to stroll, kayak, or enjoy outdoor concerts with the skyline as a backdrop.

It’s also part of The RiverFront project, a bold effort that links three major green spaces — Gene Leahy Mall, Heartland of America Park, and Lewis & Clark Landing — into one seamless destination along the river.

If you’re looking for the best view of Omaha’s blend of city and nature, this is it.
