North Carolina State Capitol
Welcome to the North Carolina State Capitol, a true architectural gem and the very heart of our state's government. This magnificent Greek Revival structure, completed in 1840, replaced an earlier capitol destroyed by a devastating fire in 1831. Imagine the determination to rebuild! Designed by Ithiel Town and later refined by Alexander Jackson Davis, it cost an impressive half-million dollars – a staggering sum back then. For generations, this building has served as the seat of our General Assembly, the Governor's office, and the State Supreme Court, though today it primarily houses the Governor's and Lieutenant Governor's offices, and some administrative functions, with the General Assembly having moved to a more spacious building in 1963.

Take a moment to admire the details: the imposing Doric columns, the elegant rotunda, and the impressive statue of George Washington by Antonio Canova, commissioned in 1821, which tragically melted in the 1831 fire. The current statue is a recreation. On the grounds, you’ll find monuments to three U.S. Presidents with North Carolina ties – Andrew Jackson, James K. Polk, and Andrew Johnson – alongside the moving North Carolina Women Veterans Monument, dedicated in 2021. This isn't just a pretty building; it's where decisions shaping North Carolina’s future have been made for nearly two centuries. It's truly a place where history lives and breathes, and sometimes, even debates quite loudly.

When you are ready to continue, please follow your navigation along the right side of the building.

The Presidents North Carolina Gave the Nation Statue
Please look to your right. The Presidents North Carolina Gave the Nation statue honors the state’s unique place in American presidential history. Located near the North Carolina State Capitol, this bronze sculpture celebrates the two U.S. presidents born in North Carolina: James K. Polk and Andrew Johnson. Both men rose from modest beginnings to hold the nation’s highest office, shaping the country during pivotal moments of the 19th century.

James K. Polk, the 11th president, oversaw a dramatic expansion of the United States, adding vast western territories during his single term from 1845 to 1849. Andrew Johnson, the 17th president, served during the turbulent aftermath of the Civil War, facing the immense challenge of Reconstruction. The statue invites reflection on leadership, ambition, and the complex legacies of these figures.

Set within Raleigh’s historic civic landscape, the monument offers visitors a chance to consider how North Carolina’s influence has extended far beyond its borders, leaving a lasting mark on the nation’s story.
