Oklahoma State Capitol
Alright, folks, look up and marvel at the Oklahoma State Capitol! What makes this building truly one-of-a-kind? Well, for starters, it's the only capitol in the world with active oil wells right on its grounds, pumping black gold even as our lawmakers debate inside. We are in Oklahoma, after all! Construction began way back in 1914, designed by the architectural firms of Layton & Smith, though it wasn't officially completed until 1917. Interestingly, the original plans called for a dome, but due to the economic pressures of World War I and budget constraints, it was famously omitted. For decades, it stood as the 'capitol without a dome,' a quirky fact many Oklahomans enjoyed sharing. Finally, in 2002, the majestic dome you see today was added, completing the original vision and truly crowning this architectural gem. This Neo-Classical building houses the executive, legislative, and judicial branches of our state government. As you drive by, imagine the history made within these walls, from pioneering laws in the early 20th century to modern-day decisions shaping our future. It’s a testament to Oklahoma's enduring spirit and its unique blend of political ambition and natural resources.

Oklahoma History Center
Please take the exit to the right and look to your left.
The Oklahoma History Center is one of the largest history museums in the United States dedicated to telling the story of a single state. Located just across from the Oklahoma State Capitol, the museum opened in 2005 and serves as the headquarters of the Oklahoma Historical Society. Inside its expansive galleries, visitors can explore the many chapters that shaped Oklahoma—from Native American cultures and frontier settlement to oil booms, aviation, and modern industry.

Interactive exhibits and large-scale displays bring history to life, including recreated main streets, historic aircraft, and artifacts from the famous Land Run of 1889 that helped establish Oklahoma City. The museum also highlights the diverse cultures that helped shape the state, including the heritage of the many Native American tribes who call Oklahoma home.

With its engaging exhibits and sweeping look at the past, the Oklahoma History Center offers visitors a deeper understanding of the people and events that built Oklahoma.
