¡Hola! Bienvenidos a nuestra primera parada: la Estación Union de Chicago, que verán a la izquierda. Es una de las grandes terminales ferroviarias de América y un verdadero ícono de Chicago.

Esta belleza Beaux-Arts abrió en 1925, ideada por el famoso arquitecto Daniel Burnham, el genio del Plan de Chicago de 1909 que dio forma a gran parte del diseño moderno de la ciudad.

Dato curioso: Daniel Burnham no llegó a ver su obra maestra terminada. La terminal la completaron Graham, Anderson, Probst & White, tras su muerte.

Pero su filosofía de "No hagas planes pequeños" sigue viva en esta impresionante estructura; aquí no hay nada pequeño.

Si pueden entrar al Gran Salón, ¡háganlo! El imponente tragaluz de bóveda de cañón de 115 pies, las columnas de mármol, las majestuosas escaleras... parece más unas termas romanas o un palacio europeo que una estación de tren.

En su apogeo, durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial, la Estación Union manejaba cientos de miles de pasajeros al día, enviando tropas a la guerra y dándoles la bienvenida a casa.

Chicago, de hecho, se construyó sobre el transporte. Creció rápido en el siglo XIX gracias a ferrocarriles, transporte marítimo y su ubicación estratégica entre los Grandes Lagos y el sistema del río Misisipi.

Tras el Gran Incendio de Chicago de 1871, la ciudad se reconstruyó más grande, fuerte y ambiciosa, y la Estación Union refleja ese espíritu.

Los cinéfilos quizás sientan un *déjà vu* aquí. La dramática escena de la escalera con el cochecito de bebé en *Los Intocables* se filmó justo en esta estación. También la verán en películas como *El Fugitivo* y *Enemigos Públicos*. A los directores les encanta este espacio por su escala y drama atemporal.

Imagínense, este lugar ya estaba aquí, en plena Prohibición a finales de los años 20 y principios de los 30, mientras figuras notorias, como Al Capone, quizás se codeaban con los viajeros de cada día.

Hoy, es una de las estaciones más concurridas de Amtrak y un importante centro de transporte. Casi un siglo después, sigue siendo exactamente lo que Chicago siempre ha sido: una ciudad de paso, donde los viajes comienzan, terminan y, a veces, cambian de dirección por completo.

Ahora, miren a la izquierda y levanten la vista a una de las siluetas más reconocibles del mundo: la Torre Willis.
Vamos a girar a la izquierda en la próxima, rodeando la torre, mientras les cuento historias interesantes.

Terminada en 1973 como "Torre Sears", fue construida para el gigante minorista Sears Roebuck and Company. En ese entonces, Sears era el minorista más grande del planeta y quería una sede que reflejara su dominio. El resultado: el edificio más alto del mundo, título que mantuvo por casi 25 años.

Diseñada por la legendaria firma Skidmore Owings & Merrill, la torre introdujo el revolucionario sistema de "tubos agrupados". En vez de un solo eje vertical, son nueve tubos cuadrados agrupados, permitiéndole subir más alto y mantenerse estable ante los vientos de Chicago.

Con 1,450 pies de altura y 110 pisos, redefinió lo que un rascacielos podía ser. En una ciudad que inventó el rascacielos tras el Gran Incendio de 1871, ¡eso ya es decir algo!

Quizás quieran visitar el Skydeck en el piso 103, con vistas de hasta cuatro estados en un día despejado. Y, si se sienten valientes, atrévanse a pisar "The Ledge": esas cajas de cristal que sobresalen sobre la calle, ¡a más de 1,300 pies de altura! ¡Una pasada!

Renombrada oficialmente como Torre Willis en 2009, muchos lugareños aún la llaman "Sears". Por aquí, algunos nombres simplemente se pegan.
