Gastown Steam Clock – Vancouver’s Time Machine That Isn’t Actually Old
Welcome to Gastown… where Vancouver began, and where one of the city's most photographed attractions happily steals attention every few minutes. Right in front of you is the Gastown Steam Clock. It looks like something a Victorian inventor might have built after drinking too much coffee and reading too many adventure novels.

But here’s the twist: despite looking 150 years old, this clock is actually a bit of a time-traveling trick. It was built in 1977 by Canadian clockmaker Raymond Saunders and is one of only a handful of working steam clocks in the world. So if you were expecting this to have been watching over horse-drawn carriages in the 1800s… sorry to ruin the mystery.

Every fifteen minutes, the clock lets out its famous steam whistle performance, sounding a little like an old steam locomotive arriving at a station. On the hour, it puts on a longer concert. If your timing is good, you’ll get the full show.

The steam itself comes from Vancouver’s downtown steam heating system running beneath the streets. And while steam helps power the whistles and some of the mechanisms, there’s a bit of modern assistance inside too. Even this old-looking machine occasionally needs technology to keep it honest.

Take a look around while you're here. The brick buildings, old lamp posts, and cobblestone streets around you are part of why Gastown feels completely different from much of modern Vancouver. You're standing near where the city began growing around a saloon owner known as “Gassy Jack.” One talkative bartender... and eventually an entire city happened.

Take your photos now. Chances are half the people around you are pretending they weren't waiting for the clock to whistle.

Maple Tree Square – Where Vancouver Was Born
Welcome to Maple Tree Square, the place where Vancouver essentially went from wilderness to “someone should probably build a city here.”

This odd-shaped intersection may not look dramatic at first glance, but you're standing at one of the most important spots in Vancouver’s history. Back in 1867, a colorful character named John Deighton — better known as “Gassy Jack” thanks to his talent for talking... and talking... and talking some more — opened a saloon near this very location.

Legend says Gassy Jack convinced local workers and mill laborers to help him build his tavern in exchange for unlimited whiskey. Apparently, free drinks have always been a powerful development strategy. His saloon quickly became the center of a growing settlement called “Gassy’s Town,” which eventually became Gastown... and then Vancouver itself.

Take a look around the square and you'll notice streets meeting at unusual angles. This wasn't part of some grand urban design plan. Early roads simply followed trails, shorelines, and practical routes used by workers and settlers. The result is this quirky little junction that still feels different from Vancouver’s orderly grid.

You’ll also notice the distinctive triangular building nearby — the famous Hotel Europe — often called Vancouver’s Flatiron Building because of its wedge-like shape. It looks almost squeezed into the space as if someone realized they had one awkward piece of land left and decided to build anyway.

Thousands of people walk through this spot every day without realizing they're standing at Vancouver’s original front porch.

Not bad for a place that started with a saloon and a guy who talked a lot.
