¡Bienvenidos a la Plaza Gazibowski! Este es uno de los puntos más fascinantes de la Varsovia judía de antes de la guerra.

Hoy, la plaza está relativamente tranquila, rodeada de edificios de oficinas modernos. Pero en 1938, ¡esto era un corazón palpitante! Aquí la vida judía, polaca y comercial se mezclaban sin parar.

Miren a su alrededor e imaginen las calles repletas de gente.
Tranvías chirriantes pasando a su lado. Vendedores ambulantes pregonando a viva voz. Periódicos que se vendían en polaco y yiddish. Cafeterías repletas de acaloradas conversaciones políticas.

A solo unos pasos de aquí, se podía encontrar de todo:
Comerciantes judíos, abogados, rabinos, poetas, estudiantes, sionistas, miembros del Bund... y gente que, simplemente, intentaba ganarse la vida en esta ciudad gigantesca y caótica.

La Varsovia de antes de la guerra era una de las ciudades judías más grandes del mundo, ¿eh? Casi un tercio de sus habitantes eran judíos. Y esta plaza, ¡era uno de esos lugares donde todo se encontraba!
Tradición y modernidad, yiddish y polaco, religiosos y laicos, pobreza y riqueza.

Justo aquí, podías sentarte en un pequeño café y escuchar un debate acalorado sobre sionismo, sobre literatura, sobre socialismo... o incluso sobre si el futuro de los judíos polacos estaba realmente en Polonia.

Y a pesar de la tensión en Europa, la vida aquí se sentía plena.
La gente corría al trabajo, concertaba citas, se enamoraba, iba a ver obras de teatro, compraba pasteles para el Shabat y, claro, planeaba el futuro.

Es difícil de imaginar hoy, ¿verdad? Pero en los años treinta del siglo XX, nadie aquí sabía aún cuánto iba a cambiar el mundo.

Sinagoga Nożyk
Justo enfrente tienen la Sinagoga Nożyk, una de las sinagogas más centrales e impresionantes de la Varsovia judía en los años previos a la guerra.

Paremos un segundo aquí, les cuento un poco más sobre ella. Mientras hablo, imaginen a familiares del pasado llegando aquí en Shabat, como un centro espiritual y también social.

Fíjense en la fachada elegante, las ventanas altas y el diseño imponente transmiten seguridad y una comunidad bien establecida. Esta es la sinagoga de una ciudad grande, moderna y vibrante.

Durante la semana, venían aquí comerciantes, artesanos, abogados, empresarios y familias de la zona. Pero los sábados y días festivos, el lugar se llenaba de verdad. La calle a su alrededor se volvía más tranquila, y la gente, vestida con sus ropas de Shabat, entraba en masa para las oraciones.
Si hubieran estado aquí un viernes por la tarde en los años treinta del siglo XX, habrían escuchado conversaciones en polaco, en yiddish y, a veces, también en hebreo.

Algunos hablaban de negocios, otros de política, y había jóvenes discutiendo sobre el sionismo y el futuro de los judíos de Europa.
Y esto es precisamente lo que hacía a la Varsovia de esa época tan especial: una ciudad judía enorme donde la tradición antigua y la vida moderna convivían en la misma calle.

Esta sinagoga fue construida a principios del siglo XX por la familia Nożyk, una familia judía adinerada que quería ofrecer a la comunidad un lugar de oración espléndido y central. En aquellos días, los judíos de Varsovia construyeron no solo sinagogas, sino también periódicos, teatros, escuelas, bancos y negocios por toda la ciudad.

Es difícil imaginarlo hoy, pero antes de la guerra, cientos de miles de judíos vivían en Varsovia. Era una de las comunidades judías más grandes del mundo.
Y de todas las sinagogas que funcionaban aquí entonces, esta es la única que sobrevivió a la guerra y sigue en pie hasta hoy.

Quizás por eso, cuando uno se para aquí, se siente por un momento como si la Varsovia judía de antaño todavía no hubiera desaparecido del todo.
