Hier ist der Pedernales River.
Los geht's, schaut mal nach rechts. Das ist der Lyndon B. Johnson State Park mit seiner historischen Stätte. Den erkunden wir gleich, aber zuerst genießen wir eines der schönsten Naturdenkmäler des Texas Hill Country.

Gleich überqueren wir den Pedernales River. Lasst euch von seiner friedlichen Optik nicht täuschen. Dieser Fluss prägt seit Jahrtausenden die Landschaft und Geschichte der Region. Er fließt über 160 Kilometer durch das Herz des Hill Country, bevor er in den Colorado River mündet. Dabei hat der Pedernales Kalksteinklippen geformt, uralte Zypressen versorgt und war eine sichere Wasserquelle für amerikanische Ureinwohner, frühe Siedler, Farmer und schließlich die Familie Johnson.

Der Name „Pedernales“ kommt vom spanischen Wort für Feuerstein – eine Anspielung auf die harten Steine an seinen Ufern. Bei starkem Regen kann sich dieser sanfte Bach in einen reißenden, mächtigen Fluss verwandeln, der uns an die dramatischen Sturzfluten des Hill Country erinnert.

Für Präsident Lyndon B. Johnson war der Pedernales aber weit mehr als nur ein Fluss. Als Junge ist er hier geschwommen, hat hier gefischt und kam sein Leben lang immer wieder hierher zurück, wenn er Washington entfliehen wollte. Für ihn bedeutete dieser Fluss Heimat.

Während wir die Brücke überqueren, genießt einfach mal die Aussicht. Gleich widmen wir uns der LBJ-Ranch, wo ihr erfahrt, wie dieses ruhige Fleckchen Texas als „Weißes Haus von Texas“ bekannt wurde.

Willkommen auf der LBJ-Ranch!
Gleich vor uns liegt die legendäre LBJ Ranch, einer der bedeutendsten Präsidentensitze der amerikanischen Geschichte. Offiziell gehört sie zum Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park, aber das hier war viel mehr als nur eine Familienranch – sie wurde weltweit als das „Texanische Weiße Haus“ bekannt.

Lyndon Baines Johnson wurde nur wenige Meilen von hier geboren und verbrachte einen Großteil seines Lebens im Texas Hill Country. Selbst als 36. Präsident der USA kam er so oft wie möglich hierher zurück. Zwischen 1963 und 1969 wurde diese ruhige Ranch zu einem voll funktionstüchtigen Weißen Haus. Staatschefs, Kongressabgeordnete, Militärs und Journalisten reisten alle hierher, um den Präsidenten zu treffen, während die Air Force One auf der rancheigenen Landebahn nebenan landete.

Johnson war überzeugt, dass er abseits von Washington klarer denken konnte. Viele wichtige Entscheidungen zum Vietnamkrieg, zur Bürgerrechtsbewegung, zu Medicare und den „Great Society“-Programmen wurden genau hier besprochen – umgeben von Rinderweiden und Steineichen statt von Marmorgebäuden und politischen Menschenmassen.

Die Ranch selbst erstreckt sich über mehr als 1.500 Acre und ist fast noch genauso erhalten wie zu Johnsons Lebzeiten. Wenn Sie hier anhalten, finden Sie das Texanische Weiße Haus, das rekonstruierte Geburtshaus des Präsidenten, den Familienfriedhof, historische Ranchgebäude und die berühmten Hereford-Rinder, die Johnson voller Stolz züchtete. Er entwickelte sogar eine eigene, eingetragene Zuchtlinie, die „Johnson Family Herefords“.

Während Sie weiter über die Ranch fahren, wird schnell klar, warum dieser Ort LBJ so viel bedeutete. Für ihn war das nicht nur ein Rückzugsort von der Präsidentschaft – es war sein Zuhause. Hier konnte er den Anzug gegen Cowboystiefel tauschen, über die Ranchstraßen fahren und sich wieder mit der texanischen Landschaft verbinden, die seinen Charakter prägte, lange bevor er ins Weiße Haus einzog.
