Cruzando el Columbia hacia Wenatchee
Vamos a empezar nuestro viaje por carretera desde East Wenatchee hacia Seattle cruzando el imponente río Columbia para entrar a Wenatchee. Es el comienzo perfecto para un viaje a través de algunos de los paisajes más espectaculares de Washington.

Ese ancho río que ven abajo es el Columbia, el más grande del noroeste del Pacífico. Fluyendo por más de mil doscientas millas desde las Rocosas canadienses hasta el océano Pacífico, ha moldeado la historia, economía y estilo de vida de la región por miles de años. Hoy, sus aguas generan energía hidroeléctrica, riegan inmensos huertos y viñedos, y sirven como un corredor de transporte vital.

Justo ahora estamos cruzando el puente Senator George Sellar, inaugurado en 1950. Reemplazó al puente original de 1908, que fue el primer puente de carretera construido sobre el Columbia. Si miran río arriba, podrán ver ese histórico puente de armadura de acero, hoy preservado como parte del sendero Apple Capital Loop para peatones y ciclistas.

Al llegar a la orilla oeste, les doy la bienvenida a Wenatchee, conocida con orgullo como la Capital Mundial de la Manzana. Bendecido con tierras volcánicas fértiles, mucho sol y el riego del río Columbia, este valle es una de las principales regiones frutícolas de Norteamérica. Aunque las manzanas son el cultivo estrella, los huertos de la zona también producen cerezas, peras, duraznos y albaricoques de clase mundial.

Museo y Centro Cultural de Wenatchee
A tu derecha está el Museo y Centro Cultural del Valle de Wenatchee, uno de los mejores lugares para descubrir la historia de esta región tan única.

Ubicado en dos edificios históricos del centro, el museo te lleva por un viaje a través de miles de años de historia local. Sus exhibiciones exploran a los primeros habitantes indígenas, la Era de Hielo, los primeros colonos, el ferrocarril y el auge agrícola que convirtió al Valle de Wenatchee en líder mundial en producción de manzanas.

Entre lo más destacado verás una maqueta detallada del ferrocarril Great Northern, exhibiciones sobre la industria de la manzana de Washington y reliquias del histórico vuelo transpacífico sin escalas de 1931 que terminó justo aquí, en Wenatchee.

Si vas a pasar un tiempo en la ciudad, este museo es una parada excelente para entender cómo el río Columbia, las montañas y generaciones de pioneros moldearon el Valle de Wenatchee hasta convertirlo en la comunidad que ves hoy.

Taking a UCPlaces tour is fun and easy.
