Albuquerque Behind Us — East on Route 66
Albuquerque is behind us, and we’re heading east on Central Avenue, the city’s historic stretch of Route 66.

For decades, this road brought travelers right through the heart of Albuquerque. Some stopped for a meal or a night beneath a glowing motel sign.

Others kept driving, with the Sandia Mountains ahead and the promise of another town down the road.

The city itself has a much longer story. Albuquerque grew beside the Rio Grande, where Pueblo, Spanish, Mexican, and American histories have all shaped the place we’ve just left.

Now the buildings begin to thin out, and the mountains draw closer.

Welcome back to the Mother Road. Today, we’re following it all the way to Amarillo, Texas.

The Musical Road — Listen to Route 66
Coming up, listen closely. This stretch of old Route 66 once played “America the Beautiful” through the tires of passing cars.

The secret is in a series of grooves cut into the pavement. When a car rolls over them at about 45 miles per hour, the vibrations form a tune.
It was a clever idea: give drivers a little musical reward for keeping to the speed limit.

The grooves have worn down over the years, so the song may sound faint or broken today. But as we continue east, listen for it.

Only on Route 66 could the road itself try to sing you along.
