Cresta McPherson: donde empezó la batalla
Te doy la bienvenida a McPherson Ridge, el lugar donde comenzó la Batalla de Gettysburg.

Al mirar estos tranquilos campos de Pensilvania, cuesta imaginar que en la mañana del 1 de julio de 1863, miles de soldados se concentraron aquí en lo que se convertiría en la batalla más grande jamás librada en América del Norte.

Justo después del amanecer, la caballería de la Unión, al mando del general John Buford, avistó a las fuerzas confederadas que se acercaban desde el oeste por la carretera de Chambersburg. Buford vio de inmediato la importancia de las colinas al sur de Gettysburg. Si los confederados tomaban esas alturas primero, el ejército de la Unión se enfrentaría a una lucha durísima y muy costosa para recuperarlas.

La misión de Buford era simple, pero sumamente peligrosa: contener al enemigo el tiempo suficiente para que llegaran los refuerzos de la infantería de la Unión.

Superados en número y luchando a pie, los jinetes de Buford retrasaron el avance confederado durante varias horas cruciales. Su resistencia aquí ganó un tiempo precioso para que el mayor general John Reynolds y el Primer Cuerpo de la Unión llegaran al campo de batalla. Reynolds, uno de los comandantes más respetados de la Unión, se lanzó directo al combate para desplegar a sus tropas. En cuestión de minutos, fue alcanzado y murió mientras posicionaba a sus hombres. Luz Eterna: de conflicto a reconciliación
Ante sus ojos se alza el Monumento a la Paz de la Luz Eterna, uno de los monumentos más significativos de Gettysburg.

Inaugurado el 3 de julio de 1938, este memorial conmemora el septuagésimo quinto aniversario de la Batalla de Gettysburg y rinde homenaje al espíritu de reconciliación entre el Norte y el Sur. Más de mil ochocientos veteranos de la Guerra Civil regresaron a Gettysburg para la ceremonia de inauguración, incluyendo a varios cientos que habían luchado en estos mismos campos. Antiguos enemigos, una vez divididos por la guerra, se reunieron aquí en paz.

En la cima del monumento arde una llama eterna, que simboliza la unidad y la esperanza de que la nación nunca vuelva a vivir un conflicto tan devastador. En el monumento están inscritas las palabras:
