Wenn Sie über diese friedlichen Felder Pennsylvanias blicken, ist es kaum vorstellbar, dass am Morgen des 1. Juli 1863 hier Tausende von Soldaten aufeinandertrafen – in der größten Schlacht, die je in Nordamerika geschlagen wurde.

Kurz nach Sonnenaufgang entdeckte die Unionskavallerie unter General John Buford konföderierte Truppen, die sich von Westen her über die Chambersburg Pike näherten. Buford erkannte sofort, wie wichtig die Hügel südlich von Gettysburg waren. Hätten die Konföderierten diese Höhen zuerst besetzt, hätte die Unionsarmee einen schweren und verlustreichen Kampf vor sich gehabt, um sie zurückzuerobern.

Bufords Auftrag war simpel, aber unglaublich gefährlich: den Feind so lange aufzuhalten, bis die Infanterie-Verstärkung der Union eintraf.

In der Unterzahl und zu Fuß kämpfend, verzögerten Bufords Kavalleristen den Vormarsch der Konföderierten um mehrere entscheidende Stunden. Ihr Widerstand hier verschaffte Generalmajor John Reynolds und dem Ersten Korps der Union wertvolle Zeit, um das Schlachtfeld zu erreichen. Reynolds, einer der angesehensten Kommandeure der Union, ritt direkt ins Gefecht, um seine Truppen zu positionieren. Nur wenige Minuten später wurde er tödlich getroffen, während er seine Männer anwies. Er war der ranghöchste Offizier beider Seiten, der in Gettysburg fiel.

Trotz schwerer Verluste hielten die Unionstruppen diesen Hügel lang genug, damit die Potomac-Armee Verteidigungsstellungen auf den Höhen südlich der Stadt beziehen konnte. Viele Historiker sind überzeugt, dass Bufords Entscheidung, hier zu kämpfen, den Ausgang der gesamten Schlacht entscheidend beeinflusst hat.

Schauen Sie sich ruhig einen Moment um. Hinter diesen Feldern liegen Willoughby Run, die McPherson-Farm und die Hügelketten, über die die Soldaten unter Artilleriefeuer und Musketensalven vorrückten. Die Kämpfe, die hier begannen, sollten drei Tage andauern, über 160.000 Soldaten involvieren und mehr als 50.000 Opfer fordern.

Ewiges Licht Friedensdenkmal: Versöhnung nach Konflikt
Vor Ihnen ragt das Eternal Light Peace Memorial empor, eines der bedeutendsten Denkmäler in Gettysburg.

Es wurde am 3. Juli 1938 eingeweiht, um an den 75. Jahrestag der Schlacht von Gettysburg zu erinnern und den Geist der Versöhnung zwischen Nord und Süd zu ehren. Mehr als 1.800 Veteranen des Bürgerkriegs kehrten damals für die Einweihung hierher zurück – darunter Hunderte, die genau auf diesen Feldern gekämpft hatten. Ehemalige Feinde, einst durch den Krieg gespalten, kamen hier in Frieden zusammen.

Ganz oben auf dem Denkmal brennt eine ewige Flamme. Sie symbolisiert die Einheit und die Hoffnung, dass das Land nie wieder einen so verheerenden Konflikt erleben muss. Auf dem Monument stehen die Worte geschrieben:

„Ewiger Frieden in einer vereinten Nation.“

Nehmen Sie sich einen Moment Zeit, um über den bemerkenswerten Weg nachzudenken, der sich hier zeigt. 1863 war Gettysburg der Schauplatz unvorstellbarer Gewalt und Opfer. 75 Jahre später standen sich Veteranen, die einst gegeneinander gekämpft hatten, Seite an Seite gegenüber. Sie feierten nicht das, was sie trennte, sondern das, was sie letztendlich wieder vereinte.

Von diesem Aussichtspunkt aus können Sie auch die schiere Größe des Schlachtfelds erahnen. Die Kämpfe begannen im Westen am McPherson Ridge, wo die Kavallerie der Union den Vormarsch der Konföderierten verzögerte. Im Laufe des Tages weitete sich die Schlacht nach Norden und Osten aus, bis schließlich Zehntausende Soldaten um die Kontrolle über die Hügel rund um Gettysburg kämpften.

Das Friedensdenkmal erinnert uns daran, dass Gettysburg nicht nur eine Geschichte von Militärstrategie und Heldentum auf dem Schlachtfeld ist. Es ist auch eine Geschichte der Heilung, des Gedenkens und des unermüdlichen Strebens, eine vereinte Nation zu bewahren.
