Benvenuti a McPherson Ridge, proprio dove è iniziata la battaglia di Gettysburg.

Guardando questi tranquilli campi della Pennsylvania, può essere difficile immaginare che la mattina del 1° luglio 1863, migliaia di soldati si scontrarono qui in quella che sarebbe diventata la più grande battaglia mai combattuta in Nord America.

Poco dopo l'alba, la cavalleria dell'Unione guidata dal generale John Buford avvistò le forze confederate che si avvicinavano da ovest lungo la Chambersburg Pike. Buford capì subito l'importanza delle colline a sud di Gettysburg. Se i confederati avessero preso per primi quelle alture, l'esercito dell'Unione avrebbe dovuto affrontare una battaglia durissima e sanguinosa per riconquistarle.

La missione di Buford era semplice, ma incredibilmente pericolosa: trattenere il nemico abbastanza a lungo da permettere l'arrivo dei rinforzi della fanteria dell'Unione.

In netta inferiorità numerica e combattendo a piedi, i cavalieri di Buford riuscirono a rallentare l'avanzata confederata per diverse ore cruciali. La loro resistenza qui fece guadagnare tempo prezioso al maggior generale John Reynolds e al Primo Corpo dell'Unione per raggiungere il campo di battaglia. Reynolds, uno dei comandanti più stimati dell'esercito dell'Unione, cavalcò dritto nel cuore degli scontri per schierare le sue truppe. Nel giro di pochi minuti, fu colpito a morte mentre posizionava i suoi uomini. Fu l'ufficiale di grado più alto di entrambi gli schieramenti a perdere la vita a Gettysburg.

Nonostante le pesanti perdite, le forze dell'Unione difesero questa collina abbastanza a lungo da permettere all'Armata del Potomac di stabilire posizioni difensive sulle alture a sud della città. Luce Eterna: dal conflitto alla riconciliazione.
Proprio davanti a voi svetta l'Eternal Light Peace Memorial, uno dei monumenti più significativi di Gettysburg.

Inaugurato il 3 luglio 1938, questo memoriale commemora il settantacinquesimo anniversario della battaglia di Gettysburg e celebra lo spirito di riconciliazione tra Nord e Sud. Pensate che più di 1.800 veterani della Guerra Civile tornarono qui per la cerimonia, inclusi centinaia che avevano combattuto proprio su questi campi. Vecchi nemici, un tempo divisi dalla guerra, si ritrovarono qui in pace.

Sulla cima del monumento arde una fiamma eterna, simbolo di unità e della speranza che la nazione non viva mai più un conflitto così devastante. Sul memoriale sono incise queste parole:

"Pace Eterna in una Nazione Unita."

Prendetevi un momento per riflettere sullo straordinario percorso rappresentato qui. Nel 1863, Gettysburg fu teatro di violenze e sacrifici inimmaginabili. Settantacinque anni dopo, i veterani che si erano scontrati in battaglia si ritrovarono fianco a fianco per onorare non ciò che li aveva divisi, ma ciò che alla fine li univa.

Da questo punto panoramico potete anche rendervi conto delle reali dimensioni del campo di battaglia. Gli scontri iniziarono a ovest, a McPherson Ridge, dove la cavalleria dell'Unione rallentò l'avanzata confederata. Con il passare delle ore, la battaglia si estese a nord e a est, trascinando decine di migliaia di soldati nella lotta per il controllo delle alture intorno a Gettysburg.
